"I used to be scared of him all the time, he tanned me so much". Huck Finn p.14, ch.5, par.1. This statement means that Hucks father used to hit him when he was a child. It also means that he was always scared of his father every since he his father "jolt" him the first time. The word "Jolt" probably means hit.
The first time I read this statement I felt very bad for Huck. Beating your child is the worst thing a person could do, in my opinion. I believe that their is no reason why should want to beat on your child no matter how complicated things can get.
